Women’s Issues

The social conditioning that women have grown up with can, unfortunately, be extremely limiting in their adult years. For example, we are taught to be "good girls" who then turn into people-pleasing women. We lose ourselves to others and forget what we truly want for ourselves.

Does this sound familiar to you? Colorado women, have you lost much of the joy you once felt? Are you struggling to express yourself or make decisions? Have you been living with negative self-talk and low self-worth?

People conditioned as women may experience certain environmental, psychological, and biological challenges related to gender that have an impact on their mental health and well-being. If not addressed properly, these challenges can lead to anxiety, depression, a lost sense of self, or self-harm.

Are Women More at Risk of Developing Mental Health Issues?

From the World Health Organization:

  • Women experience General Anxiety Disorder and Major Depression twice as often as men
  • Although women tend to discuss their mental health with their primary care doctors more than men, it is estimated that just under half of all women with mental illness are not diagnosed nor treated
  • Women’s reproductive years, including during pregnancy, are a particularly vulnerable time for developing mental health challenges
  • Women consistently attempt suicide more than men, though men are more successful
  • Women’s perimenopausal years create more hormonal changes that can affect mental health and well-being

Some common mental health issues experienced by women include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Monthly emotional swings
  • Postpartum depression
  • Post-traumatic stress
  • Eating disorders
  • Infertility
  • Abortion
  • Perimenopause and Menopause
  • PMS
  • Other Mood/hormone-related challenges
  • Low self-worth
  • Self-harming behaviors
